Dubbed as Hollywood’s new ‘it girl’ along with the likes of Jessica Chastain and Emma Stone, Jennifer Lawrence has encountered much critical acclaim following her breakout role in Winter’s Bone (2010). Since then, her role of Katniss in The Hunger Games (2012) has put her at the forefront of social media and press attention.
But I don’t believe it’s entirely her undeniable acting skills that have made her into Hollywood’s next hot thing. Rather, it’s her honest, easy-going interview personality that has charmed the world. Her self-confessed lack of a filter sees her being brutally honest about celebrity life and her movies. She said of her squirrel skinning scene in Winters Bone “I should say it wasn’t real, for PETA. But screw PETA.”
Her more recent success in Silver Linings Playbook (2012) saw her win a Golden Globe over acting legends, including Meryl Streep and Judi Dench. At just 22, Lawrence has not only encountered commercial success, but the critical acclaim that is rare for young female actors. Unlike Kristen Stewart, Lawrence seems to have already escaped from the teen fiction rabbit hole, and made a name for herself outside of the franchise.
Rolling Stone penned her as “the most talented young actress in America”. This, and being the object of many a ‘girl-crush’, I think it can safely be predicted that Lawrence’s career will be continue to be successful both commercially and critically. Here’s hoping that her career is more Jennifer Jones than Jennifer Aniston.
